Jack Blythe and Marc Francl from United States; Jack: “I am a third year graduate student at Columbia Univeristy GSAPP. My passion for architecture began as a child, growing up in the city of Chicago. I have pursued this passion ever since, earning a bachelor of Architecture from University of Colorado Boulder and working for multiple firms, most recently Solomonoff Architecture Studio. I love finding and developing the hidden language and pattern that lies within every project while approaching things from a technical perspective. This approach combined with my partner Marc's artistic influences led to a rich and layered solution for housing in the Bronx.”

Name of Project: Housing for the Arts
Project Description: Housing for the Arts focuses on sharing the housing project and the site as a whole with the community through the integration of interconnected arts programs. These programs are composed of live/work residential units for local artists, exhibition spaces, classrooms, and mural walls created by artists and community members alike.
Through a language of pixelation, these programs are broken down into a spectrum of public and private spaces, both large and small, and integrated into the residential functions of the project through a network of exterior catwalks that connect the entire building. Through the active engagement of the residents and local artists within the program and physical appearance of the building, Housing for the Arts becomes a living icon of the culture, identity and lifestyle of the South Bronx.
