385 / Staś Gulkowski and Burcu Doğruyol: HOME

Submission #385 | Staś Gulkowski and Burcu Doğruyol: HOME — “During these unprecedented times, for the first time, we all share a similar experience of adjusting to the new realities of our everyday life. We are used to expanding our world through exploring the city around us, taking part in the collective activities that are going on in it, or simply getting to know people in the community. Contrarily, today’s conditions require us to sustain our needs and pleasures within the walls of our house. Being limited by these boundaries as well as transforming that limitation into countless opportunities is part of the experience.”

367 / Mateo Mantilla: THE BRANCH

Submission #367 | Mateo Mantilla: THE BRANCH — “ The corner of Congress & Drayton St. (Savannah, GA) served as a parking lot located next to BB&T. The emptiness of this space made the surrounding buildings considerably bigger and heavier which made this side of Johnson Square a very uncomfortable place to be. The contrast between the lightness and comfort in the square and the heaviness of the site inspired this project, which has the intention to unify the opposing concepts of heaviness and lightness through its architecture and materiality.”

Submission #337 | Ireny Abrahim: MWO (Multi Worker's Occupancy) — “This studio was about Home Economics, understanding housing in different scales. This housing project focused on worker's housing by understanding the current living conditions in a worker's household. In the current state of a worker's housing around the world, workers feel forced to live within their work sites. This creates a segregation between low and high income workers. Within San Francisco, being one of the most expensive cities in the world, especially in the SoMa district most workers are either migrant or immigrants who live where they work.”

336 / Samira Chahine: Design Before Decline

Submission #336 | Samira Chahine: Design Before Decline — “Throughout years, education has always been considered as one of the most crucial stages of human’s life cycle. 257_Zahid Ajam: Redrawing East Harlem

Submission #257 | Zahid Ajam: Redrawing East Harlem — “Through analyzing the urban fabric, a block of NYCHA properties seemed to divide East Harlem into two halves. These NYCHA developments follow the model of the tower in the park where the park was intended to become a public social space. Over time it was considered an unsuccessful model since attempting to become everyone’s space, the park became no man’s land as no one took ownership of it.”

Submission #131 | Ashish Bhandari: [Un]ser house — "For this project we had to replace a middle school in Ann Arbor. I designed the middle school to be used by the students during school hours and by the community during off hours. The design was settled by looking into the surrounding neighborhood for context and the major programs of the school acted as the "homes" and the public space acted as the "street". I was looking into how the major programs could influence how the building and the student reacted within the "middle" and how that space could be engaged.
