Submission #367 | Mateo Mantilla: THE BRANCH — “ The corner of Congress & Drayton St. (Savannah, GA) served as a parking lot located next to BB&T. The emptiness of this space made the surrounding buildings considerably bigger and heavier which made this side of Johnson Square a very uncomfortable place to be. The contrast between the lightness and comfort in the square and the heaviness of the site inspired this project, which has the intention to unify the opposing concepts of heaviness and lightness through its architecture and materiality.”

This housing project focused on worker's housing by understanding the current living conditions in a worker's household. In the current state of a worker's housing around the world, workers feel forced to live within their work sites. This creates a segregation between low and high income workers. Within San Francisco, being one of the most expensive cities in the world, especially in the SoMa district most workers are either migrant or immigrants who live where they work.”

These NYCHA developments follow the model of the tower in the park where the park was intended to become a public social space. Over time it was considered an unsuccessful model since attempting to become everyone’s space, the park became no man’s land as no one took ownership of it.”

Submission #215 | Alejandra Cardenas: Retirement Community — "For my project I studied the relationship between the Bed, Door, and Window and was most interested by the relationship between the door and window. As you enter the unit you walk into 8’ tall ceiling not knowing the ceiling slopes to a 20’ until you walk around and experience the room. The wall size windows allow each individual to fully showcase a large collection of personal jottings and memorabilia giving full control to the residents to personalize the units as they wish.

Each unit have common formation parts to spatial whole relationship. Each duplex is made up of two uniquely designed units which are fused together to create a set of relationships which the experience of duality of the unit is completed, the full function of a house is achieved through the connection."

I designed the middle school to be used by the students during school hours and by the community during off hours. The design was settled by looking into the surrounding neighborhood for context and the major programs of the school acted as the "homes" and the public space acted as the "street". I was looking into how the major programs could influence how the building and the student reacted within the "middle" and how that space could be engaged.

The proposed master plan is a thoughtful response to Eero Saarinen’s 1954 master plan, the current site context, and MIT’s needs and desires as a leading institution in science and engineering. Identifying 9 concepts visible through the lens of a mid-twentieth century architect allowed for setting the framework for a design process relevant in today’s world with great hopes for the future built environment.

The origin of the issue is the weak quality provision of affordable housing in the urban development. In order to improve the quality of housing for the poorer community, the provider of the housing (government and developers) need to see the benefit of investing concerning social and economic purpose.

The first half of the studio focused on developing a schematic master plan for a specific area in San Juan that covers both entrances into the shantytown the site just outside of the old fortification wall. The challenge with this project was to honor both 'sides' of San Juan, the old colonial city (Old San Juan) and the shantytown (La Perla).
