286_Anderson Beuting: Chapel Project

Anderson Beuting from Brusque - SC | Brazil: “I'm a recently graduated architect with experience in residential and small-scale projects. I've participated in numerous architecture competitions, winning 2 international honorable mentions while doing so. In 2017 I've established my practice "Studio 27°", which focuses on residential, small-scale commercial and institutional projects, as well as architecture competitions. While at the university, I've always striven for quality work instead of quantity, searching for the meaning of architecture that I could embrace and make my contribution.”

Name of Project: Chapel Project

Project Description: Upon request for a renovation and amplification of an existing chapel, that could later be used independently from the building it was attached to, for weddings and celebrations to take place, the concept was to create a small piece of art in the middle of the city of Joinville. Now more than ever, religious buildings are being simplified and deconstructed to its conceptual shapes, that concentrate the desired feelings and emotions of such a place. In this case, the idea was to create a robust and impotent exterior, that would reveal itself to the observant as they entered the space.

Like one wall that embraces and twists around the people it wants to protect. The invisible force of god materialized in the architecture. The bricks give the exterior a rugged appearance, like a thick crust protecting the delicate interior, with plastered walls and colored-glass panels. The inside room features a great colored-glass panel behind the altar, which lets an immense amount of light into the space, as well as the skylights above, which can be regulated to let more or less sun in, depending on the time of the day. The result it an austere meditating space, where all your sensations are captured and enhanced through the presence of a heavenly light from above, and where you can only get to once you’ve passed the narrow, almost maze-like entrance, almost as part of a purification of the being, so that you can enjoy the light inside.”
