Submission #165 | Meeghan Lee; from SCI-Arc — "Quietly situated in the centre of downtown Detroit, The Detroit Incubator is a collection of numerous tech startup companies that aspire to grow and innovate within the technological realm of the once flourishing city. The incubator is accessible twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week, romoting a high volume of workflow and communication for the emerging businesses."
Submission #164 | Jonathan Cooper and Qiwei Li — "Our Thesis focuses on how the juxtaposition and scaling of mass can manipulate space to form a new vertical city typology. This project locates itself somewhere between the canonical work of Mies van der Rohe in the Seagram Tower and the aggregated city work of Peter Trummer. One precedent that informed the design of the project is Rem Koolhaas' De Rotterdam project. The elevations and the sectional drawings of the building reveal the displacement of the different masses that comprise the overall form. The masses appear to have slid past each other just enough the produce a sense of disruption or agitation."
Submission #161 | Sapeer Hillel — "This thesis engages a discovery about the simultaneity of ground, decomposing of podiums, deferring of floor plates, and creating new, un-recognizable identities that deal with scale, distance, and proximity between these entities. As Jeffrey Kipnis describes in the lecture “Discrimination”, different relationships to the ground land are called out. Mies Van Der Rohe’s Farnsworth House can be described as having a performative relationship to the land.
Submission #159 | Adrian Wong: Each Piece Not Sold Separately — Through an ensemble of figures, this thesis explores heterogeneous configurations in architecture through a dialectic between new and old, figural and monolithic, post-industrial and rural. Located on the outskirts of Bologna, this project sits on top of an existing factory with expressive structure reminiscent of Nervi’s Paper Factory in Mantua.
