Located in Versam Switzerland, Zumthor is careful to preserve the existing building and landscape through his use of detailed joinery, selection of wood, and signature “knitted” approach.”
Submission #325 | Dan Whelan: Sanctuary for the Harrowed — “Since the beginning of human existence, people have been crafting spaces to house the processes of life and the inevitable event of death. These spaces range from monumental to economical, and display a vast array of cultural indicators, such as status and religion. While extremely diverse across the globe and universally significant, this typology has experienced less evolution through the centuries as its primary purpose of housing the dead has gone unchanged.”
Submission #313 | Iago Blanco and Daniel Valle: Water Pavilion — “The proposal for the Water Pavilion explores various water principles and the translation into an architectural experience. The notion of fluidity, buoyancy and constant change are principles for our proposal. The pavilion stands between a submerged and emerged level –as submarines do- defining a sensible state of equilibrium between dry and wet.”
Submission #299 | Daniel Avilan: Occupy Vitkov; The Czech National Brewery — “The National Monument at Vitkov in Prague was once built to celebrate Czech statehood. However, both the Nazis’ and the Soviet Army took possession of the monument in order to propagate their regime. After the war, the monument was once again taken back by the Czech people and used as a museum. The isolated and unused monument remains an unpleasant reminder of the history the Czech people have faced.”
Submission #284 | Adriana Garcia: Jacksonville Culinary Institute — “Located in Florida, the city of Jacksonville is well known for its business centers, banks and many other cultural points, yet as a major tourist attraction it lacks in the existence of recreational spaces. This project aims to improve the current state of public spaces in Jacksonville by providing different areas that are opened for the public to enjoy, while at the same time generate a programmatic gradient that ranges from public, to semi private to private.”
Submission #246 | Ashish Bhandari, Benny Cruz, Chris Campbell, Daniel Seidman: The Playground — “This project revolves around a live/work/play mixed use residential complex which acts as a gathering place for the community surrounding the neighborhood.”
Daniel Rebolledo: Nuevo Circo de Caracas — This was an academic project that was set on a historic landmark which is the Nuevo Circo de Caracas, and old slaughter house in the late 19th century, and was refurbished and transformed into the new bull fighting ring and biggest venue place in the early 20th century. The building was abandoned for several years as bull fighting became less popular over time.
