Biophilic Affiliation (A natural approach towards mental health rehabilitation)
The UK is in a mental health crisis, with a particular focus on children and young people. Young people are affected disproportionately with over half of mental health problems starting by the age of 14 and 75% by 18. Plans to transform attitudes to mental health towards these groups, have been announced by Theresa May. However, there is no new Treasury money for the plans. Funding for care is still challenging.
An alternative form of mental health therapy is being explored, the use of nature. The relationship between man and nature results in biophilic design, which in the built and natural environment could be used to provide a framework for the understanding of its inhabitants and the natural world. This culminates in the beneficial impact upon man’s mental health and well-being.
Biophilic Affiliation will become the catalyst for man’s first steps towards using biophilic design within an institutional setting, as an alternative form of treatment for those suffering from mental health issues.
