Submission #332 | Rana El Dakkak: Soul Treat — “The design concept of the project was mainly inspired by a natural element as nature has a strong relationship with the human’s well-being. The natural inspiration for Soul Treat design concept was the tree leaves. The project’s site has different types of trees and each tree has different leaves shape; this triggered the idea of the natural inspiration for this project.”
Submission #329 | Dan Whelan: Song of the Sea — “The proposed chapel rests on the foundations of the restored Pessegueiro island fort - Portugal, its simple white brick form providing a clear focus point from the main coastline. The restored fort provides a space of transition between the natural landscape and the inner space of the chapel while providing panoramic views across the entire site. Within the chapel spaces are enclosed, intimate and spiritual in nature, inviting visitors to take a moment for introspection and quiet contemplation.”
Submission #315 | Joe Mihanovic: Conical Conglomerate — “A loose collage of geometrically similar yet contextually distinct masses decorate the site, providing a diversity of experience and unexpected moments of socialization. The volumes are all derived from the aggregation of truncated cones and the Boolean subtraction and subsequent rearrangement of prismatic masses.”
Submission #213 | Zhiyuan Peng: Student Accommodation for The Porto School of Architecture — "The site is a slope. And we are asked for keep all the trees on the site. So I think to make my project in different height will be a nice way to fit the site.The buildings around the riverside of Porto gave me another idea. All the buildings are on the hill and all in diverse heights."
Submission #205 | Paulina Hurtado: Narrows Pavilion — "Narrows pavilion is a social platform that works as a living organism introducing the subject into a portal that addresses space as the expression of scenery. The pavilion explores the idea of implied functionality. Something that might happen but doesn’t have a fixed definition. For instance, it is a space for exhibitions, but it is not a museum; it is a space with scenographic features for performances, but it is not a theater; it is a space for dinning and social encounter, but it is not a cafe nor a restaurant."
Submission #165 | Meeghan Lee; from SCI-Arc — "Quietly situated in the centre of downtown Detroit, The Detroit Incubator is a collection of numerous tech startup companies that aspire to grow and innovate within the technological realm of the once flourishing city. The incubator is accessible twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week, romoting a high volume of workflow and communication for the emerging businesses."
Submission #120 | Kerem Yesildag, Nisan Baskin, Beyza Avci and Buğra Eser: Research & Development Institute — The rural site is a heavy crowded urban settlement with insufficient informal housing. The local people lack basic needs as; clean water, sanitation, durability, and housing space and permits. What we as architects can do is provoke social change. What we can do about is the living areas.
Submission #107 | Houman Khosravi: Music for Housing — "The first exercise of of the semester was to craft a conceptual construct based on design intuition as well as my preconceived notions and views of London. Using mechanical found objects, I created three scenarios to build off of, each would become its own construct."
Yeshu Tan: Kindergarten — The central concept of this project is the “performance” of kindergarten. I explored new spatial conditions in the sloping site where kids can walk from the inside classroom to the roof by stairs in order to appreciate the beautiful sea and the skyline of Manhattan.“One of the most fundamental issues a society faces is how to best educate it’s children.
