Submission #326 | Zoe Russian Moreno: Ka' Poy Yepü — “Canaima National Park - Venezuela, is one of the largest natural reserves on the planet and possess definitive characters that differentiate it from other natural reservoirs. It’s soil dates back to the Precambrian period, between 1.5 million to 2 billion years old; which makes it one of the most ancient rock formations in the world's geochronology. These unique formations called “Tepuis” are a kind of table-top mountains with 90-degree vertical walls.”
Submission #305 | Ciaran Magee: An Ambiguous Heterotopia — “Writers have been described as being either architects or gardeners. That is to say, one who cultivates a story or one who structures it. This thesis investigates the space between this dichotomous metaphor, researching the context of the garden as a spatial and architectural intervention.”
Submission #304 | Andrea Cappiello: Monastic Archive — “The word ‘archive’ generally indicates a working system structured towards the efficient recall of items. This idea of a predominantly passive collection changes when buildings are involved because a work of architecture can be argued to be an existing archive. This understanding further shifts the perceptions concerning the manner in which archives are presented.”
Submission #285 | Ahmad Baydoun: Escape to an Alternative-Power Archive — “This study examines the nature of territories in the region of Lebanon that are governed by alternative systems in contrast to state-based structures of governance. In these territories, the state has minimal-to-limited influence on the social, political, and economic activities of such given areas, since certain non-state actors exert a structure of governance based on their political agenda.”
Submission #217 | Andrei Zamfir: Rewilding Research and Education Centre — "The design concept was driven by the semi-transparent vegetative layers that break the barrier between nature and humans. The final design incorporates breeding rooms and laboratories but also a public open air theatre with a cafe and exhibition rooms."
Submission #125 | Giada Maria Pillitteri: Disassemble and Reassemble Palermo North #19 — My thesis is insert in a currently research from 2007 (professors: Roberto Collovà/Gaetano Licata) about the potential of the transformation in the expansion north area of Palermo. Starting from observations about the study area emerges a North Palermo shaped by a double face: the facades show themselves as the “representative’s fronts”, the “planned” side of buildings and almost originals, who oppose the backs, internal and hidden parts that, changed over time, include heterogeneous "additions", arising from the needs of the inhabitants.
Submission #120 | Kerem Yesildag, Nisan Baskin, Beyza Avci and Buğra Eser: Research & Development Institute — The rural site is a heavy crowded urban settlement with insufficient informal housing. The local people lack basic needs as; clean water, sanitation, durability, and housing space and permits. What we as architects can do is provoke social change. What we can do about is the living areas.
Submission #112 | Mo Faul: Tale of Two Cities — This was a 10 week studio project based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The first half of the studio focused on developing a schematic master plan for a specific area in San Juan that covers both entrances into the shantytown the site just outside of the old fortification wall. The challenge with this project was to honor both 'sides' of San Juan, the old colonial city (Old San Juan) and the shantytown (La Perla).
Submission #96 | Julia Cistelecan: The Mausoleum for The Lost at Sea — Inspired by Plato’s invented island of Atlantis that fell out of favour with the gods and famously submerged into the Atlantic Ocean, the Mausoleum for the lost at Sea taps into the naval history of Greenwich and investigates the idea of loss and memory.
Joshua Aylett: Systems Diversion — I graduated from the Oxford School of Architecture this past summer and I am currently living in Madrid. I am working at a freelance capacity producing architectural visuals and drawings, as well as exploring other creative interests including photography, design and research. I am curating an exhibition of student work from the ‘unfinished Madrid’ postgraduate studio at Oxford Brookes University 2016.
Edward Radev: Homi(num)reditus — The gallery spaces from the original proposal and new proposal will intertwine to create a transition between two worlds. The academy itself is set in the near future where extraterrestrial life is being explored. The academy being a center for research of extraterrestrial plant species and how they can be used to create architecture that can be grown.
Arooj Ahmad and Georgia Ntoukaki: Lost Memories of Glasgow — The project is essentially an exploration into the memories left behind by buildings that are now derelict, under-used and ignored. How architecture today can capture the essence of the spaces and meanings behind those spaces and convey them in a different manner to inspire a connection between people and the place they inhabit was the key idea.
