Submission #388 | Arian Saghafifar and Ali Sader: Deira Urban Market — “Understanding the Urban Market: Urban agriculture is a social movement for sustainable communities, where organic growers, foodies, and locavores form social networks founded on a shared ethos of nature and community. Many people are looking for food security, nutrition, and income generation which are key motivations for urban agriculture and local markets.”
Submission #280 | Moritz Spaeh: Urban Farming — “The newly emerging commercial and industrial district is based on the former industrial area. In order to give the building in the north a representative address, the existing halls were demolished and the market hall was pushed between the existing buildings. From the east, a long, narrow lane leads to the market hall.”
Submission #256 | Stanley Tan: Market Monument — “The proposal intends to be a concentrated city intensifying the uses of the traditional city whilst becoming an alternative infrastructure to the ground conditions created by many contemporary developments.”
Submission #135 | Stanley Tan Hanjie: The Lot — "The Lot: Communal Social Housing Scheme for a Garden Community and Farmers’ Market. The project studies the theme of urban-suburbanisation, calculated efficiency of a self-sustainable urban infrastructure and the design of a rural retreat. Living units are integrated into a living canopy which is used to grow organic vegetables and also works as a rainwater harvester and irrigation system. A food market is also provided for the public."
Submission #118 | Koh Jhee Son: Affordable Housing Incorporating Farming and Market for Social Symbiosis — The design project aims to introduce social role of affordable housing in urban context as a strategy to seek understanding and interest among government and developers. The origin of the issue is the weak quality provision of affordable housing in the urban development. In order to improve the quality of housing for the poorer community, the provider of the housing (government and developers) need to see the benefit of investing concerning social and economic purpose.
Submission #107 | Houman Khosravi: Music for Housing — "The first exercise of of the semester was to craft a conceptual construct based on design intuition as well as my preconceived notions and views of London. Using mechanical found objects, I created three scenarios to build off of, each would become its own construct."
Submission #98 | Jose Lacruz Vela: Vallehermoso Market Rehabilitation — The project explores the conjunction between skin and use, through the restoration of an old market in Madrid. Undertaking the need of food production within cities, while generating a new public space, intertwined with a farm and an enclosed market.
Lian Ren and Shuo Yang: THE CORE — "THE CORE is a social housing project located in Bronx, New York. Our housing design explores the possibility to live in various cores in order to maximize density and light. All of these cores provide structural support for all the floor structure, which is waffle slabs. The public cores are located in the center of each block to connect all the unit cores on the four sides. All the unit cores are very densely placed near the perimeter to allow for more sunlight and cross ventilation."
Rachel Don: Reset — This thesis is a design exploration into the overlap of architectural and film disciplines. By targeting the popular discourse of dystopia within the genre of sci-fi.
