Submission #165 | Meeghan Lee; from SCI-Arc — "Quietly situated in the centre of downtown Detroit, The Detroit Incubator is a collection of numerous tech startup companies that aspire to grow and innovate within the technological realm of the once flourishing city. The incubator is accessible twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week, romoting a high volume of workflow and communication for the emerging businesses."
Lian Ren and Shuo Yang: THE CORE — "THE CORE is a social housing project located in Bronx, New York. Our housing design explores the possibility to live in various cores in order to maximize density and light. All of these cores provide structural support for all the floor structure, which is waffle slabs. The public cores are located in the center of each block to connect all the unit cores on the four sides. All the unit cores are very densely placed near the perimeter to allow for more sunlight and cross ventilation."
Steven Moore: Fracture — The conceptual approach will attempt to guide the process of the creation of a space where student can integrate in a collaborative way with people from a field that has been already absorbed into the growing economy of Johannesburg. This will foster the relationships of a complex economic nature, and at the same time allow the new youth unemployed to be absorbed into the marketplace.
Ayo Rosanwo: Defensive Incubator — This project was provoked by an event which occured during the summer of 2016, involving the fatal shooting of Philando castile filmed and streamed live by his girlfirend on facebook. I was particularly interested in the empowerment she felt at the time by having a phone with a video recorder. The project is underpinned by this particular moment, where surveillance and technology becomes a mechanism for self defense.
