This new building typology aims to create a healthier balance between academics and student living.”

At the same time it was necessary to create a space that was strongly characterized to increase the sense of belonging to an university campus."

The proposed master plan is a thoughtful response to Eero Saarinen’s 1954 master plan, the current site context, and MIT’s needs and desires as a leading institution in science and engineering. Identifying 9 concepts visible through the lens of a mid-twentieth century architect allowed for setting the framework for a design process relevant in today’s world with great hopes for the future built environment.
Yara Abboud and Roxani Maragkoudaki: University Island — A competition called for the abandoned island of Poveglia in the Venetian Lagoon to be transformed into a university campus. Preserving the landscape of the island is one of the main strategies in the proposal.
